The truth of the matter is that debts are a drain on your business efficiency and you need to plug the leak as soon as possible. There are several ways to go about this. Many debt collection agencies will start with the traditional methods: sending calls and letters threatening action. Most business owners believe this is all they have to do, letting unpaid debts go up to a year or more. The truth of the matter is that once a debt is 60 days delinquent, it is 50% less likely it will ever get paid. Once you have made the decision to outsource your collection efforts, you will begin to see drastic improvements in your cash flow. As you have likely noticed, your delinquent customers are not responding to phone calls or letters from you requesting late payments. In many cases, they know they owe you the money and they expect to hear from you but know you have no power against them. But concerns about how interaction with a collection agency may impact their credit rating or possibly bring legal charges will add a degree of severity to your claims that most customers will respond to. When calls and letters fail, there are other courses of action. Collection agencies can set up payment plans, working with your delinquent clients so they are paying off over time, in small increments. Collection agencies can take the time you can't to get to the root of a client's nonpayment and come up with solutions. If these measures fail, more extreme cases may call for legal actions like arbitration or mediation. Before you bring the matter to court, facing hours of wasted time and legal fees, you may consider an asset and liability investigation. Some debt collection firms hire private detectives or investigate the financial holdings of clients to determine their ability to pay. Once this information is collected, you will save yourself many of the headaches associated with a small claims court case. These unpaid debts decrease in value over time and can cause delays in potential improvements, ordering, and even paying your own bills. It is unfair to let your good credit suffer because someone else can't pay their bills on time.
